Experience
80 years of premium
coffee culture
Coffee expertise is not attained overnight. Rather, it takes years of work and experience. Vollmer has been a byword for coffee culture for over 80 years. The roots of this expertise go back to 1936, when hand-roasted coffee was sold in a small colonial goods store in Münster.
In the 1930s, the small colonial goods store on Münster’s Geiststraße sold coffee, chocolate, cocoa, sugar and other luxuries that were still brought to Bremen or Hamburg on white ocean liners. Even to this day, our logo shows the silhouette of an ocean liner as a reminder of this time. Owner Heinrich Vollmer roasted the coffee freshly by hand. Following this, the coffee specialities were delivered – not just to Münster and the surrounding area but as far as the Sauerland region. In the early years, goods were delivered to customers by bicycle or train. The number of regular customers who were willing to pay for top quality increased rapidly. Following the war years, the company’s customer base expanded as it served a wider and wider area. Before long, Vollmer had established itself as a byword for premium coffee.
Since the 1950s, the striped packaging has been a calling card for the brand’s peerless quality. In the 1990s, Vollmer needed more room to expand its production activities and moved to nearby Altenberge. Longstanding employee Matthias Peters took over the company from the founding Vollmer family – and continued the expert tradition of roasting by hand. Peters broadened the roasters’ understanding of quality to include key values such as sustainability and customer orientation. Today, Vollmer supplies partners all over Germany, including many high-profile names such as Miele, Café Extrablatt and Bäckerei Terbuyken. All of our customers have great esteem for the coffee culture that has evolved under the Vollmer name. Vollmer is large enough to meet the needs of even the most discerning customers yet is small enough to retain the unique artisanal quality that distinguished the company in its early years. This unique blend is central to the success of the private roastery in Altenberge.
“An innate understanding of the
product has been second
nature to us from the start.”
Matthias Peters
The small colonial goods store in Münster was already selling coffee, chocolate, cocoa and sugar from foreign climes in the 1930s. A few decades later, the company’s VW minibuses were a common sight in Münster, delivering the much-coveted specialities to our customers.
Even in those days, Heinrich Vollmer not only set great store by the product itself but also by how it was marketed. Elegantly designed coasters and distinctive striped packaging had a lasting impact on sales, helping to establish Vollmer coffee as a highly desirable brand. Today, we still appreciate the importance of clear, concise communication. Added value from which our business customers benefit every day.
